Heart diseases and mainly coronary artery disease represent the main cause of death in the Czech Republic. About 30.000 people die of coronary artery disease every year, of which more than 20% are under 65 years of age. Coronary artery disease is caused by a process of deposition of cholesterol, calcium and other substances on the inner wall of the coronary arteries of the heart. Such narrowed artery prevents normal blood flow and causes failure in sustenance and oxygenation of the heart muscle. This condition is in some cases accompanied by so-called anginal pain – angina – pain below the sternum. Full closure of the coronary artery leads to acute myocardial infarction. Late treatment leads to heart failure.
Departments focused on heart rhythm disorders, coronary artery diseases, heart disorders and pacemaker checks are part of the cardiology department.
